Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk
Volunteer Opportunities

The Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk is a community event with the bulk of the work being done by teams of volunteers captained by a chairperson. Each team determines its meeting schedule and team captains are members of the Planning Committee which has reqular monthly meetings. We are always looking for concerned, energetic individuals who have a passion for fighting hunger.

Below are descriptions of the various tasks associated with putting on a successful walk. The Planning Committee meets monthly from March to October and all volunteers are expected to work on Walk Day (October 18, 2015).

 

The Arrangements Team is responsible for Walk Day logistics and safety.

Responsibilities include:

* Securing city permits
* Contracting vendors
* Planning pre- and post-walk entertainment
* Setting up route
* Ensuring safety of walkers
* Preparing and managing sub-team budget
 Skills Needed:
* Detailed oriented
* Willing to do lifting and “get dirty”
* Able to negotiate contracts with vendors

 

The Publicity Team promotes the Walk to media and other organizations.

Responsibilities include:
* Contacting local media
* Writing press releases
* Writing newsletters
* Arranging interviews with television/radio stations
* Coordinating media coverage on Walk day
Skills Needed::
* Connections with local media
* Strong writing skills
* Background in print and television production

 

The Sponsorship Team Purpose helps secure funds that will offset the costs of implementing the walk.

Responsibilities include:
* Soliciting new and existing sponsors
* Following up to secure funding
* Cultivating relationship with new sponsors
* Stewarding relationship with existing sponsors
* Planning/coordinating sponsor luncheon
  Skills Needed:
* Strong contacts in business community
* Be available to actively solicit new businesses
* Strong writing skills

 

The Recruitment Team works to enlist organizations (faith groups, schools, civic groups, etc.) to participate in the walk

Responsibilities include:
* Contacting existing organizations to secure participation
* Working in the community to secure new walk teams
* Serving as point-of-contact for recruiters
* Training and educating team recruiters
* Planning/coordinating recruiter training sessions
Skills Needed:
* Detailed oriented
* Confident making phone calls and following up with contacts
* Willing to actively solicit new organizations

 

The Walk Day Volunteer Team coordinates the volunteer activities on Walk Day

Responsibilities include:
* Recruiting Walk Day volunteers
* Assigning groups to properly fill need
* Promoting community service opportunities in schools
Skills Needed:
* Detailed oriented
* Confident making phone calls and following up with contacts
* Willing to actively solicit new organizations
